100 + Best American Sitcoms of All Time

I love TV. I'm not very creative, and I'm all sorts of lazy, so TV is a natural fit for me. Life is just easier when other people do the thinking for you. Some of the best TV are Sitcoms, or situational comedies. Sitcoms are a cornerstone of television. I've composed a list of what I think to be the best 100+ sitcoms of all time. Of course I've probably missed some, and of course you aren't going to agree completely, but remember that lists are subjective and far from perfect.

111 The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-1963)

110 Chico and the Man (1974-1978)
109 California Dreams (1992-1997) By a lot of the same people that did "Saved by the Bell;" this is another teen-oriented sitcom.

108 That Girl (1966-1971)

107 Rhoda (1974-1978) A spin-off of "Mary Tyler Moore."

106 The Monkees (1966-1968)

105 Dennis the Menace (1959-1963)

104 Family Affair (1966-1971)

103 Here's Lucy (1968-1974)

2 I Love Lucy (1951 - 1957) #2? Lucy! You got some spanin' to do!
1 Sienfeld (1990-1997) Seinfeld is master of it's domain, with Jerry's Jewish mullet and all.

  1. I am shocked that Arrested Development made it to #13! The show was fantastic, but doesn't seem that popular.

  6. Glad to see Three's Company so high on the list; I'm 20 years old and just happened to watch it one night on TV Land -- I fell in love :)

  7. I was shocked about Arrested Development listed at #13 too, although I absolutely agree with it. I think the show wasn't very popular, in part, because it was a hard show to pick up in the middle. It's one to those series you really have to watch from beginning to end. Overall this is the fairest of all the lists I've seen.

  10. No Larry Sanders Show, really? Hey Now!

  11. Couldn't bear to watch 7 of the top 10, but to each his own. Am old enough to remember a couple others not mentioned: 'Jack Benny,' Burns & Allen,' 'You Bet Your Life,'(Groucho rocked!), and some very funny shows probably more in the "variety" category: 'Steve Allen Show,' (with Tom Poston, Louis Nye, and Don Knotts)'Jack Benny,' the original Bob Newhart variety show 1961, "George Gobel Show,' 'The Red Skelton Show,' and 'Your Show of Shows.'

  12. My favorite show, The Nanny, made it on here! I am so glad. It's such a funny, clever, enjoyable show that so many people wouldn't/won't watch now in reruns because of her voice. But you get over it fast. My boyfriend wouldn't watch it, never had seen a whole episode, and then, when we met, I made him watch one episode and he ended up watching, like, 6 in a row, cause it's a great show. Niles is one of the funniest characters ever on a sitcom. And the similarity between the physical comedy on this show and the great sitcoms back in the day like I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Dream of Jeannie, is really fun. I think Fran has a lot in common with Lucille Ball as comedic actresses and I am big fans of them both.

  13. It was great to see Community get some recognition, but no Scrubs? I would put seasons 1-3 of Scrubs up against anything on this list, honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Just a debacle that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia isn't here.

    My best list is
    1. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
    2. The Simpsons
    3. Seinfeld
    4. Arrested Development
    5. Curb Your Enthusiasm
    6. Everybody Loves Raymond
    7. Friends
    8. Parks and Recreation (so far)

Everything beyond that is a toss up between Community, 30 Rock, Fresh Prince, South Park, That 70s show, and others.

I might have to watch I Love Lucy since I've heard nothing but good things

I have to agree that SCRUBS most definitely should be on this list, not sure if I agree with the standings in full - a few of these shows were before my time - but in the most part it looks realistic, I also have to agree with another post that humor evolves over time, that much I know for a fact and let me tell you, if one day you think to yourself "that show I used to watch was awesome, Im going to download it again" don't do it... a lot changes in 10 or 15 years and what you found funny back then will make you feel awkward right now!!!

  17. Man... my favorites are frasier (for brilliant writing), The Fresh prince of Bel air(for hilarious one-liners), Friends (for making people care so much about the characters), and the office (For Dwight).

    ReplyDelete
  18. LOL. I came to this list just to make sure my favorite sitcom of all time, Roseanne, was on here. And this person personally insults the creator / writer / producer / star! Man it must be hard to be a talented, visionary woman!

  39. Where is The Larry Sanders Show??? That was an amazing one!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Carol Burnett? I can't believe it didn't make the cut.

  41. What remains is to take a look at the facts, as they are: the official ratings of the cable companys and the credits, given by the audiences.

The Emmy winner for lead actor in a commedy series 2010 and 2011 is Jim Parsons, who works on "The Big Bang Theory", 68th on your "list".

For your opening "If you don't like it, make another one", I reply you an:

there is no list to make about tv-shows, that someone finds adorable. The only thing to do is to determine, that you might have no cable contract or no sense of humor at all.

    Sorry for that...

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1st the big bang theory
    2nd family guy
3rd two and a half men

simpsons has stopped being funny since the movie

    7. The Simpsons
    8. Two and a Half Men
    9. All in the Family
    10. Keeping Up Apprearances

Now, THAT is what I call a list of the top 10 best sitcoms!

    ReplyDelete
  45. "Martin" is the best sitcom ever. I'm 38 years old and have seen a lot of sitcoms, but nothing has made me laugh like "Martin"....you-go-boy. Not saying "All In The Family", "Goodtimes", and "Jamie Fox" was not funny, Martin got you all beat!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Without The Larry Sanders Show this list is silly.

    ReplyDelete
  47. fraier is the best sitcom of all time even though it is disputed!!!
but is defiently the best of every show ive seen

    ReplyDelete
  48. You forgot "Yes, Dear"

    ReplyDelete
  49. While i have watched many, many of these sitcoms mentioned religiously, there are only 2 that are IMO light years ahead of the rest...

    #1... Three's Company

    #2... I Love Lucy

Everything else is well below these two. No one on TV can ever match the physical comedy John Ritter showed, that show is in a class of it's own!! Lucy was just as goofy, love every episode!

    Sitcoms worth mentioning...

    I Dream Of Genie

    Full House

    Fresh Prince

    Mr Ed

    Bewitched

    Married with Children

    All in the Family

    South Park

    Brady Bunch

  53. 1. Seinfeld
    2. Friends

    7. Frasier
    8. Everybody loves raymond
    9. That 70's show
    10. The cosby show
I kinda like this list but ive never really watched seinfeld and the couple episodes i did see werent funny but i don't agree with people saying shows suck or r the worst shows ever. This is bcuz everyone has different opinion on wats funny and wats not. Like my fiend absolutely hated friends(even though she had never seen it) but then i made her watch a couple episodes and keep an open mind about it and now she really loves it. So to recap, you shouldn't just decide u hate a show so when u watch it u just think its stupid, u should always try to keep an open mind and watch AT LEAST 5 episodes, and u should never put HIMYM before friends... EVER! dont get me started on why not.

  54. I find your list hard to believe - I know different tastes for diff folks but man, your way off on some of those picks - her's my greatest top 10 of all time hands down - btw I know comedy TV - I lived it!

    1) I Love Lucy - come'on bam!
    2) Seinfeld - awesome episodes
    3) All in the family - easily 3rd

    6) Everybody Loves Raymond - awesome writing n Cast

    8) Big Bang Theory - these writers belong in the writer's hall of Fame!
    9) King of Queens - simply said, Kevin James

    --------------------------------------
Thank you for your list anyways

  55. No How I Met Your Mother... come on, come on, come on

  56. You are missing two all time classics!

    The Beverly Hillbillies

    Gillian's Island

    ReplyDelete
  57. To be honest, I never found Seinfeld that funny. I would argue that Friends should be #1. I also think Step By Step should be somewhere between #50 and #100 as it was an anchor of the highly popular TGIF lineup for over 5 years. As for the Wonder Years, I'm not sure I would consider it a sitcom. It wasn't as much a comedy as it was a drama. If you rate the top 100 TV shows of all time, Wonder Years would definitely be on that list.

    ReplyDelete
  58. KING OF THE HILL?? Are you kidding me?? South park, the simpsons, family guy, BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD??? These are NOT sitcoms! Dont get me wrong i love family guy but is no way shape, or form a sitcom. My opinion, Home Improvement should have been #1. Now THAT was a sitcom.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Are you fucking kidding me? FRIENDS is the best sitcom ever! It's so much better than Seinfeld

    ReplyDelete
  60. "63 shows better than Honeymooners...I think not"
Thank you! With the Honeymooners being #64, there's no way that I can take the rest of this list seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  61. To make a list like this, you have to try and look past personal bias. Some people's comments here show that they can't see past themselves at all. I never cared much for 'I Love Lucy', but it certainly deserves to be in the top 10, regardless. Anybody who puts 'The Big Bang Theory', 'The Nanny' or 'Two and a Half Men' in the top 10 doesn't care about television history at all. That doesn't mean I don't like these shows, but greatest of all time? No way!

  62. Decent rankings, but you lost any and all credibility by not having Scrubs ANYWHERE on your list. Scrubs is one of the most smartly written sit-coms in the last 20 years.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The top 3 sitcoms (according to ratings) right now are Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, and How I Met Your Mother. How could you now have How I Met Your Mother? Or Parks and Rec? A lot of the old shows on there were good for their time, but let's face it, we've almost perfected the art of sitcoms. A lot of today's average sitcoms would be considered amazing compared to older ones.

  64. And whoever wrote this needs to learn what a sitcom is. For example, if a character dies in one episode and then is unexplainably back the next, multiple times, it's not a sitcom. (South Park)

  71. Some dumbass motherfuckers think that The Big Bang Theory sucks. You cocksuckers have no brains at all. This show is one of the best sitcoms. Most of the people are too dumb and retarded to understand the show. If you have a slight knowledge about the world and science you'd understand the show

  72. How can anyone say that the best shows were from 1990 and after? There were some good and even great shows in that time period, but c'mon the majority of the better shows are from back in the day.Now don't get me wrong,i love Seinfeld and the Simpsons,i'm also a big fan of the Office,South Park, and of course Family Guy.It's just that i feel in the 50's,60's,and 70's it was a different, and i feel funnier brand of humor.Maybe you can even say it was smarter and more sophisticated, although more innocent at times. And It's not a generational thing.I was born in 1978.I just know the classics when i see them.At any rate my top 10 would be as follows........ 10.BarneyMiller 9.Car54 8.Soap 7.Honeymooners 6.Bewitched 5.HappyDays 4.Seinfeld 3.Taxi 2.MarriedWithChildren 1.Cheers

  73. 74. Seinfeld always the best ever!

    ReplyDelete
  75. How is 3rd Rock From the Sun so under-appreciated? It's one of the funniest shows ever, and certainly one of the best acted (that's why it won more Emmys for its first season than any other show in history).

  77. "Seinfeld" and "All in the Family" are the two best sitcoms and the only 2 sitcoms I remember feeling the night they were on, everybody watched.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I personally don't consider cartoons sit coms.

    ReplyDelete
  79. You forgot a-team,knight rider, baywatch, magnum p.i, Hawaii 5-0 martin kung fu the little rascals, etc

    ReplyDelete
  80. Decent list, it had most of the best. The Cosby show and Facts of Life shouldn't even be on the list let alone in the top 10. At least the number one show was correct "Seinfeld".

    ReplyDelete
  81. Honeymooners should be one or two with Seinfeld being the other

    ReplyDelete
  82. Cosby Show definitely should be in top 10 - it was one of the top rated shows of it's era. I am just sad that Full House ranked above so many greats - like 3rd Rock, Perfect Strangers and one of my very favorites, Community. Full House? Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I never thought it was, but clearly Frasier is underrated. It's my personal favorite, the jokes are very sophisticated, the writing is excellent, better than any other show I've seen. Frasier wins... Seinfeld 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Thanks for the list. I'd put the Honeymooners much higher, like number 2 right behind Seinfeld. I'd also rank the Dick Van Dyke Show much higher certainly in the Top Ten. Also, the black and white episodes of Andy Griffith were great, the ones in color not so much. The Wonder Years has to be on the list somewhere along with Barney Miller.

But to each their own: I never found Lucy funny and I wish that guy would finally meet those kids' mother.

    3. That 70's Show

  88. Roseanne was the best show. Your comment regarding her was insulting and idiotic.

    You missed "That Girl".
    You missed "Gilligans Island"
    You missed "Bewitched".
    You missed "Ellen".

    This list is useless.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I appreciate the list. It gave me more to hunt on Netflix and HuluPus that I hadn't already thought of myself. I am shocked that most of these aren't on either one, but enough are to at least start off with ...

    ReplyDelete
  97. If you don't have King of Queens in your top 3 than you don't know what real comedy is. The best show by far and the only one that actually makes me laugh out loud, not that fake laugh or smile those other shows offer. Kevin James in movies are a different story. He could be great but picks bad movies and tries to change his acting trying to not let King of Queens define him. I have no clue why bc he was the funniest character of all time. Just my opinion but a lot of people agree. He is so gifted. All the new shows are horrible and I'm 24 so I'm not biased.

    ReplyDelete
  98. decent list but I think Happy days should have been in the top 10. and happy days beats the brady bunch by a mile.
