I wonder how this one happened.

I have an overwhelming urge to break off all of the icicles.

I like how there is no snow on the ground, but the tree is covered in ice.

Pretty. I love winter.

I know this doesn't look like a tree, but it's called the Belle Isle Ice Tree, and it has been a tradition in Detroit since the 60's. It’s basically Christmas trees piled up with a pipe running through it. The top of the pipe has a spout that is constantly spraying water. The constant spray, coupled with the cold weather, adds layers upon layers of ice to this organic sculpture.

#6 is especially nice. In East Texas, when the pine trees start getting iced up, they become a down right hazard. The limbs break off, taking power lines with them, and block roadways.
ReplyDeleteThe last photo looks like the stalactites inside a limestone cave. I have not seen snow like this & wonder how the poor trees cope. Guess they do. How did the trees in photos 3, 4 & 5 get covered in ice in this way? It looks lovely, but very strange.
ReplyDeleteAmazing shapes! I agree with Jacqueline that 3,4 & 5 are particularly bizarre. Never seen anything like those!
ReplyDelete#7 - Such a powerful force as trees, bowed and humbled under the spell of ice.
