The 90 Best Cartoons of All Time

I think just about everyone has a soft spot for cartoons. There is a wide variety out there, each with something to offer. I remember on Saturday mornings as a kid, grabbing a big mixing bowl and filling it with cereal; I'd hunker down in front of the TV and watch Dennis the Menace, Smurfs, Thundercats, etc. Good times.

I've compiled a list of what I believe to be the 90 best cartoons, ever. If you don't agree with my list, I don't care, get your own list. If I forgot some, I appologize, there are a lot of cartoons out there. It is important to note that I honestly could move some of these up or down in the rankings, even the top ones. Never the less, here they are:

Other Cartoons of Note:

Freakazoid (1995-1997)

Cow and Chicken (1997-1999)

25. DuckTales (1987–1990) I want to swim in a bank full of coins, so bad.

Should've been the 85 best cartoons of all time.

  3. looks like you didn't even rank these, but just rattled off the first 84 cartoons you could think of

  4. Because I ranked them incorrectly? It's a subjective list.

  7. Tom and Jerry at no. 4? Really? Tom and jerry isn't that great... Animaniacs, Tiny toons, should be higher on the list... spielberg man... and no Freakazoid? i notice some anime at the bottom list... so no naruto, bleach? robotech? macross, southern cross etc or even spiderman and amazing friends? or the new animated series? yes the list is subjective but honestly it sucks... sorry if i come off mean or brutally honest... i don't mean to offend but some of the ranking doesn't make sense... i know its probably YOUR preference but your preference is kinda weird... btw, insider info, people in the cartoon biz hold gummi bears and futurama to be extremely high on the list of best cartoon ever... i agree with Looney tunes as number 1 spot though...

    ReplyDelete
  8. Tom and Jerry at no. 4 - Definitely. The Smurfs and the Flintstones are to high in my opinion. A couple to think about adding: Droopy? Droopy should own a top 10 spot. Woody the Wood Pecker? Otherwise great list!

  9. I didn't see popeye but I will look again.

  10. "Pinky & the Brain" was a separate series for a while. And thoroughly rocked.

    Bleach, Claymore,Full metal alchemist...

    38. DBZ
    76. Naruto
    89. Inuyasha

  13. How about 'Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man'? Hilarious, and the 4 seasons available on DVD.

  14. This list is meaningless without Jonny Quest.
And I'd put The Tick much farther up.

    Top Cat
    Wacky Races
    Mysterious Cities of Gold
    Pole Position
    MASK
    Rupert the Bear
    Fantastic Max

You should banned from making cartoon lists, banned I tells ya!

  19. Where's Dogtanian and The Muskerhounds? Seriously, you should think about taking your list down and burning it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. EXCUSE ME... 'AHH REAL MONSTERS' !!??!!??

    ReplyDelete
  21. What about Gargoyles? That was a great cartoon!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thannnkkk yoouuu teen titans!!! It may be a childish show but watch episodes like the beast within or the end part one through three it might not be as silly and layed back as you think ;) all episodes on youtube please consider? Oh and pretty good list otherwise ^.^

  23. I'm almost positive that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And just as was stated before the list, if you don't like the list, why don't you make your own instead of bitching about someone elses? I personally thought the list was pretty damn good.

    ReplyDelete
  24. so did i :D very helpful when trying to remember older shows i loved as a kid for re-watching.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Opinions, whatever - this list is just poorly executed. Can you explain to me how "Recess" deserves to be #62 while Speed Racer is #87???? I've never even really seen Speed Racer, but you're going to have a hard time convincing me that it means less than Recess.... this list is totally random.

And really, you include Family Guy and even American Dad... just shameful. I admonish you, child!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Recess is an awesome show when you take time to appreciate it

  26. wow naruto and inuyasha not in the top ten this list is bull. some of these cartoon dont even belong on the list. 29. My name is Kurt. Don't worry about all the assholes, notorious Nick. I was just looking for some ideas for cartoons to look up on youtube and you helped me out a lot. Thanks! Also: Hey everybody! Lists are subjective! Nick isn't claiming any authority he doesn't have. Relax. You could learn to be more funny as bullies from Foghorn Leghorn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LCsiWL6gn0&feature=related

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mask should be on there, and Transformers should be in the top 5

    ReplyDelete
  31. Who dare suggest Phineas and Ferb! That show is crap. Anyways, the list is good. Obviously many cartoons were left out, there are lots of cartoons out there and past. I do agree with the nature of the listings, obviously there are some preference changes with each person. But I must say Looney Toons MUST be No.1, MUST. They define the golden age of cartoons, so I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good list Nick.......... Sure you must have worked hard...i agree with the list..... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. NO real 80's action cartoons? Transformers, GI Joe, and Thundercats? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  34. MUST CHECCK OUT "CHOWDER" AND "ADVENTURE TIME"
All in all, GREAT list. I'm glad you gave King of the Hill its due. Southpark should have been alittle higher

    ReplyDelete
  35. O man! I forgot, so I cant blame you. But wht about Venture Brothers (gotta love a show about failure), Frisky Dingo and Sealab 2021, and Dethklok? And Home Movies
(ALL THESE LISTS NEGLECT "HOME MOVIES"- probably the smartest cartoon other than South Park ever to be on TV.
Also, though they are both Japannese (sp?) Cowboy Beebop and Ghost in the Shell are AMAZING.

    ReplyDelete
  36. OMG? Why isn't "Spartikus and the Sun Beneath the Sea" on this list? It was only aired in the US for for 2 years (1985-87 nickelodeon), this was mainly attributed to the fact that it was a foreign series but with world acclaim. With its surreal landscapes and deep character driven themes, was a memorizing cartoon for kids. And the Menuto opening song was epic (in fact versions in most countries was performed by some famous singer to that country of sort). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48NaLR8V9fE

    ReplyDelete
  37. bull shit........nothing true....naruto should be there in the top 10 list...

    ReplyDelete
  38. SOUTH PARK RULES... if u put all of those cartoons together they wouldn`t be 1/2 as good as south park...but wihtout dungeons dragons this list is awful..the old x-men??? this list sucks

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mighty Max should be top 3.

    ReplyDelete
  40. What about "Cow & Chicken" it was an Emmy Award nominated show...Regardless of it's adult-natured humour...."Ed,Edd & Eddy'???????

    ReplyDelete
  41. good cartoons
FYI: most of your years are off ex: scooby doo went threw the 90's

    ReplyDelete
  42. Seriously guys, if you don't like the list go make your own. Most of these comments are just people complaining. Kurt had the right idea! It was an awesome list to help me figure out what I wanted to watch. Thank you good sir for your opinion! Everyone else needs to stop being so negative and whiny!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lol... it's almost like nobody read the first few paragraphs, eh?
    Ignore the haters, they're everywhere.

Contribution to the list of things left off - Mighty Orbots. Crunch was sweet. Also, Astro Boy.

    Peace and happy watching!

    ReplyDelete
  44. wa abt digimon for me its 1st then the simpsons

    ReplyDelete
  45. its so funny people get mad about a show not being on the list when it is on the list. hit control-f and type it in and it's gonna be there. you people are half retarded or half stoned.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Phineas and Ferb should be given mention... I think they are of similar quality to the animaniacs and tiny toons...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Where's Count Duckula????

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't care if its subjective or not. This list makes no sense and is totally dumb. Bevis and Butthead beating out Batman the animated series is just a perfect example to your idiocy and stupidity. B and B shouldn't be on anyone's list. It lacks intelligence and good taste. The list flat sucks and you know it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. maybe he wasnt ranking the cartoons. maybe he was just listing them. and its his opinion anyways so even if he was ranking them it dnt matter. i like the list seeing as how u took ur time out to make it

    ReplyDelete
  50. tbf i dont know why everyones having a go you want your perfect list go make one this list is whoever made it OWN OPINION, jeeze get a grip !!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks for the list. Nice job. It's funny how everyone's perspective is different. If you haven't seen it, check out the teen titans. The ones with "Mad Mod" are my favorites. Very surreal (and they even got Malcolm McDowel to do the voice for the villan.)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous, Feb 13, settle down, Bevis. Huh, huh, huh. What a dork.

    ReplyDelete
  53. yes naruto s in the best cartoons

    ReplyDelete
  54. naruto should be the first

    ReplyDelete
  55. except "lisa the vegetarian" is one of the best simpsons episodes ever.

    ReplyDelete
  56. WHERE IS AMERICAN DRAGON JAKE LONG? SHOULD BE NUMBER 1

    ReplyDelete
  57. SAMURAI X???????????????????.............WHERE IS IT?????? ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!.....................................................SAMURAI X..............................

    ReplyDelete
  58. where is superjail? You have family guy which is so boring, and not superjail?

the animation in it is amazing, character design and voice acting. Everything is perfect. should be at least in top 5.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Very good list indeed. I am looking for some older cartoons for my kids to watch. Also thanks to the posters (and whiners) for mentioning even more cartoons! I wanted to mention some Nick Toons...

  64. i think this list is the shit! although alittle out of order in my opinion but thats just my opinion. this is a great list. and fuck all those people that want to see nothing but japanese animation cartoons. how the fuck do you guys even watch that stupid bullshit?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't know how some people don't like cartoons i watch them 24/7. is it because am a kid am 17!!!! i know i'd still be watching them when am 50+

    ReplyDelete
  72. i dont see digimon and yugioh

    ReplyDelete
  73. that reminds me of some more cartoons such the proud family, american dragon jake long, lilo and stitch and the little mermaid.

    ReplyDelete
  74. also what about the pink panther, the groovey ghoulies, inch high private eye, fang face, captain caveman, sabrina, looney toons, mickey mouse and even betty boop?

    ReplyDelete
  75. what ever you do, I think that you shouldn't add the squid billies. It is the most nerdiest cartoon ever!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I realise you've put a lot of effort into compiling this list, and thank you for taking the time to do so by the way, it was nice to see a few of the old classics I'd forgotten such as Jimmy Neutron (I know it's hardly a classic but it already feels like one), but, and I mean no offence, I fear you've either made a grave error or you have not seen a particular cartoon.
My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic. Number one spot, there is nothing else in my mind that could beat it, cartoon or not. I hope that you either a) have already watched it and can't be bothered to shifty your list around or b) haven't seen it and will do so. Seriously, it's better than air. I only feel I should mention it as nopony else has.
Well I'll let you get on with your doubtlessly busy schedule!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Seriously, King of the Derp? Fumily Gay? American Dad? You must be kidding!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hah, King of the Derp! LOL
Oh, and King of the Hill, or Derp, sucks!

    ReplyDelete
  79. what about toxic crusaders and captain america

    ReplyDelete
  80. I don't know if anyone suggested this yet but what about
G Gundam? I Loved that show but the later ones killed it.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Where is Invader Zim?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Superfriends at 69 and Gummi Bear Adventures at 31. Superfriends is the roiginal superhero cartoon and still stands up today. Gummi Bear Adventures is gay. The most glaring omission is Venture Bros. which should be at the #1 position. How do you compile a list of the greatest cartoons of all time and fail to even mention the greatest cartoon of all time? Don't take my word for it, check out IMDB ratings for TV series. In fact none of the highest rated animated series are on your list. Lame.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hmm. I didn't see WILD THORNBERRYS, LITTLE BEAR, FRANKLIN or BEARENSTEIN BEARS up there. Those were good

    ReplyDelete
  84. The Lion King deserve a good spot too and you didn't even include it at all...weird

    ReplyDelete
  85. So many things are missed and UNCORRECT on this list. For one, I didn't see or probably missed Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon was for sure at least top 20-25! And Pokemon, due to it's popularity & awesomeness, need to be higher than what you gave it! Pokemon, Yugioh, Dragonball Z are worthy of top 10's. Looney Toon, Tom & Jerry I would for sure agree. But I have loved more Anime series that aren't for kids..and I doubt that's partly why you created this list anyway lol

    ReplyDelete
  86. Heavens to Murgatroyd! I guess I will exit, stage left! The top 15 is pretty good, though I don't know about #3 being up there. Are you from Texas?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Generator rex
    ben 10 alien force
    GIO
    Check those outs :)

    ReplyDelete
  88. The Real Ghostbusters and Ducktales should be higher. There are also some misses--where is Home Movies? Venture Bros.? Archer? But overall, this is a really solid list. Glad you took the time to make it--it shows that you put some thought into it!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Robotech
    Silverhawks
    Thunderbirds
    Bionic 6
    ...
thanks for putting up the list. Childhood memories...

    ReplyDelete
  90. I would have made a few changes, but overall it's pretty good. I do have one problem, why do you not separate the saturday morning / kid cartoons from the sunday night / adult cartoons! I feel like it's unfair to both types to be put in the same list...

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hey Man, Thanks a lot for doing this! I honestly didn't realize how many cartoons That I had really liked but, forgotten about over the years.
Personal preference is exactly that.....PERSONAL PREFERENCE-Period. I am sure as you wrote this out, there are some you remembered later and would like to include now...etc. Making a list like this is not easy; I know, I tried. But, thanks for the memory jog and if the babies want to argue about their favwit katoons wet dem! HAHA

    ReplyDelete
  92. I like your list but it seems like all of them are from the US (as far as i know). I think last year i found out about a show called Cowboy Bebop (im pretty sure it's asian) and it has to be my favorite cartoons OF ALL TIME, everybody should check it out. This show has the most believable characters, action (gunfights), it has really good art, sometimes humor, and the story in each episode is incredibly good. I also think the Boondocks should be up here

    ReplyDelete
  93. X men and Batman should be much higher on the list! Both are much better than the recent movies. Possibly the two greatest superhero cartoons of all time!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I love your list. The 90's had so many great cartoons that those growing up with them love to this day. Great Job!

Another awesome 90's cartoon: Dungeon's and Dragons.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Good list, that's real fun, thanks. It's funny to see the a-hole comments that are negative. It's not like this is his college thesis, it's a list of good cartoons. NO suggestions I saw in the comments would make my list. Good to see Jem on there, muppet babies, loved duck tales in the day. Would boot Tom 'n Jerry, and Bevis 'n Butthead from top ten (still on list), maybe put X-men which seemed oddily intelligent for american audiences, and "something" else in the top ten.?. Still, Good list. fun.

  96. Anybody, but anybody who doesn't KNOW that Loony Tunes should be the first, and the simpsons at second should re-evaluate their life. Don't worry about the list..no..you need help. And if you ARE one of the many who think "my personal favorite cartoon" should be NUMBER ONE!!! at least!!!(over the likes of loony tunes), you should evaluate your ability to make even the most basic of life decisions like eating or pooping, and focusing on those. Because you're brain is REALLY broken, and doesn't need to be bothered by these lists.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I definitely agree that x-men and batman should be much higher. I agree that loony toons should be number one, but defitely x-men number 2 and possibly batman or GI Joe be number 3. Good list, but missed placement of greatest action hero cartoons of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Richie Rich, Naruto, Woodpacker, The Powerpuff Girls, Voltron, Duck Tales, Tiny Toon Adventures, Tom & Jerry were my favorite cartoons. Glad to see that an awesome post.

  103. I like your list! Your rankings are DEEPLY FLAWED ;) but I after reading this list and the comments, I made a list of my own and headed over to Amazon for a buying spree, thanks for that! My contributions for what I didn't see:
    Fantastic 4- World's Greatest Heros
    Kim Possible
    DangerMouse
    Dilbert
P.S. You need to do a cereal list:
#1 Peanut Butter Capt n' Crunch

    ReplyDelete
  104. why not mickey? he's a classic

    ReplyDelete
  105. In my personal opinion, The Simpsons should be No.1 and Futurama should be higher on the list. What about Totally spies?

    ReplyDelete
  106. My Little pony; friendship is magic..anyone ?

    ReplyDelete
  107. The Three Friends and Jerry is also an underdog, i watched it in dutch. It's not 90's i think but it's great fun

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hey guys chill for a sec u guys go back and read the first paragraph and if you still don't like it then go make ur own, the list is good all though i personally don't agree with the number listing so i'm just going to think its random. Good Job!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Futurama - your watching it and its funny, then its sci-fi and then, what's that? A tear rolls down your cheek.

    Excellent on every level!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Someone upstairs said Tom & Jerry isn't that great! What on earth is he or she talking about? It most certainly is great; it's very cute, very funny, very unusual & has great music!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Exo-Squad!!!! (classic)

    ReplyDelete
  112. What about John Candy's Camp Candy? James Bond, Jr.? What about Bonkers? How about a Pup named Scooby? What about Back to the Future? Captain Planet and the Planeteers? The Flintstone kids (when they were young, fred, wilma, betty, and barney...)?? Johny Quest (old and new one shows from long ago and during the 80's and early 90's and so on)?? Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures? What about Even Steven's or Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Ben Ten(2000 century cartoons)?? What about Mighty Mouse?? WHat about the Pink Panther? Still, with reviewing your list of top cartoons and these cartoons that I've just mentioned that didnt make the cut, I would say that my number 1 cartoon of all-time is Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers. Others (will then follow but not in any typical order/ranking)Ducktales, He-man and the masters of the universe,Thundercats, A Pup named Scooby?, Darkwing Duck,Gummy Bears, Talespin, Batman the animated series, Smurfs, The Flintstone Kids, GI Joe, James Bond,Jr., Transformers, Johny Quest (any of its series/shows), the Simpson's, the Flintstones, the Jetson's, X-Men, Muppet Babies,Camp Candy, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, Voltron, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Real Ghostbusters,Tom and Jerry Show, Tom and Jerry Kids, Dennis the Menace,Inspector Gadget, and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures,Charlie Brown,Taz Mania, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and the Magic School Bus. All of these shows that I grew up on (as well as the many others that I've named and you named).

  118. Subjective list people...

This thread has proven to me your all a bunch of morons.

    --complete morons.

I can't stop laughing at the fact your all arguing about difference of opinion. Even religion has more grounds than all of you and that stuff is RIDICULOUS.

    1. Yea how dare you argue and show your opinions... About..... Different.... Opinions. Wait? YOU'RE a moron. lol BOOM

  119. No.1 is absolutely anti-climatic. And the Best one of all from Warner Bros is "What's Opera Doc" with Bugs and Elmer doing their take on Richard Wagner's "The Ring Of the Nibelung" cycle. Bugs as Brunhilde and Elmer as Siegfried. And of course, how can we forget Elmer singing "Kill The Wabbit, Kill The Wabbit" and his spear and magic helmet. Absolute purely sheer genius

    ReplyDelete
  120. where is earthworm jim? that show is amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  121. hey, you should add these. They are the current top rated cartoons by big cartoon companies:

    Invader Zim (Nick)
    Phineas and Ferb (Disney)
    Adventure Time (Cartoon Network)
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Hasbro)

though personally, I don't like Adventure Time...

    ReplyDelete
  123. Pokemon and Spongebob are some of the best, forget Family guy and the most of that other CRAP!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I agree with how high batman is, but batman beyond should also be on the list. Just as good, if not better. Oh, and Johnny Bravo is a boss

    ReplyDelete
  125. When I say Tom & Jerry is great I'm especially talking about the 1975 version. Those great things I mentioned about T&J are things that especially apply to the 1975 version.

    ReplyDelete
  126. what about the cowboys, street sharks and savage dragon.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Thanks for putting up the list! I surprised myself by recognizg quite a few of the older cartoons since I'm younger or the same age as most of them. Might suggest a couple?

1.) Invader Zim- A very good show, though has some flaws. It's been cancelled, but there are cons that happen for it, the biggest being Invader Con. Here's a link to a commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-l-wnzXtrI

2.) Danny Phantom- Good animation, and good message. Also cancelled. This was the first commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk7mTtjvJtw

    ReplyDelete
  128. Best list I've seen. Includes the old classics, most cartoons from the second "Golden age" (1980's and 90's) and even a few recent ones. I would suggest that Danger Mouse, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Sonic the Hedgehog belong on the list somewhere. Honorable mention for Tom and Jerry Kids, Busy World of Richard Scarry, and Rupert.

    ReplyDelete
  129. pokemon is so back
    dont make more list

    ReplyDelete
  130. What about shaman king ? its a much better cartoon then 95% here is listed , moust of cartoons here sucks -.-

    ReplyDelete
  131. Avatar the last airbender will always be the best cartoon, legend of korra is also good but it doesnt beat avatar, seriously sick cartoon , there is nothing like it, its just so amazing, the story line, the comedy, the love interests, its just magic.

    ReplyDelete
  132. You lost me after number 2. King of the hill? Seriously?! Terrible cartoon. Is Phineas and Ferb even on this list? That is top 5 material. I know this is all one mans opinions but wow. King of the hill number three... And star wars at twenty seven? I just randomly scrolled up to find GI Joe at 39.... No biggie... Until I saw it was AFTER Catdog and the oblongs? This isn't a ranked list. This is random as hell.

    ReplyDelete
  133. dude dragon ball z is the best show ever made reason 1 fighting
reason 2 it has a great story!
HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT AVATAR THE LAST AIRBEDER IS BETTER THAN DRAGON BALL Z I MEAN REALLY IT WAS VOTED BEST SHOW ON NICKTOONS! DRAGON BALL Z RULLS

    ReplyDelete
  134. Why is everyone so fast to put down a list. Not everyone has heard of some shows. I do in fact love that it says the best "cartoons" not anime. So why would you put a whole different genre on it? All in all tho hun. I think its a good list :) Helped me and my son find a good cartoon.

    ReplyDelete
  135. What about Invader Zim? I love that show.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Shows that I think you underrated:

    Darkwing Duck
    Recess
DragonBall/DragonBall Z (but the quality began to drop IMO with time)
    Sailor Moon
    DeathNote
    Oban: Star-Racers

    Overrated:
    King of the Hill
    CatDog

I don't consider Family Guy or South Park to be cartoons because they are meant for adults. Although it most be acknowledged that most people like it, Family Guy contains too many "We're liberal jerk-offs" moments for me. The baby trying to kill his mom might be tolerable if almost every single "joke" wasn't like that. After awhile I just found it sickening.

    ReplyDelete
  137. one i really liked was the american dragon jake long

I just came on here to get reminded of some old shows I liked when i was younger to see if they were still anywhere on TV to show my niece and nephew. So thank you for posting this, because now I know what is still available to show my sister's children. I might even be able to show em a few of these comments so they know to NOT act like asswipes when they get older.

  180. You're really into this: Good for you!

    Can I pick your brain?

I've been looking for this old cartoon about a mouse that goes into the city each day and panhandles! When he gets back home he gets out of his rags and puts on his duds! Then he pushes these buttons on the walls of his house and it transforms from a dump to a penthouse.

Everything is great until the tax assessor shows up and his walls start shorting out!! VERY FUNNY...

    Ever see this one???

Thanks for any help you can provide....

    Good work by the way!!
